Napalm and Agent Orange (1965-1972)
Napalm is a substance consisting of plastic polystyrene, hydrocarbon benzene, and gasoline. The temperature can range anywhere from 1500 and 2200 degrees Fahrenheit. It is a jelly like substance that can stick to surfaces and burns for up to 10 minutes.
Agent Orange, also called Herbicide Orange is a mixture of chemical defoliants used to destroy any crops or forest cover that the North Vietnamese were using to their advantage. It got its name from the orange stripe found on the containers. It was approximately fifty times more concentrated than other herbicides, and caused many health issues to the soldiers using it. It contained dioxin that was found to cause tumors, birth defects, rashes and even cancer.
Napalm and Agent Orange were used in the US Deforestation program. This program was code named Operation Ranch Hand and its primary objective was to destroy crops and supplies of the North Vietnamese, as well as eliminate any tree cover they may have had. Aircrafts were deployed to spray Agent Orange as well as other herbicides onto roads, military bases, rivers, canals, and food that the enemy was using to their advantage. Overall, 19 million gallons were sprayed onto 4.5 million acres of North Vietnamese land. In addition to all of the land being destroyed, more than 400,000 were reported to have been killed by herbicides like Agent Orange. There were also Agents Pink, White, Purple, Green and Blue.
